We now accept the fact that LEARNING is a lifelong process of keeping
abreast of change and the most pressing task is to teach people how to learn
 - Peter Drucker

You may have these questions in your mind.. ‘’What is psychology all about? When and  Where does it begin and Who are the proponents?’’
For sure, you may have limited view of what psychology is, maybe based on your experience and learnings before. You may think that psychology is just about emotions, learnings, dreams and brain.Well, those are few ideas.
Here our learnings  regarding to this course:  Psychology came from the Greek words: psyche which means ‘soul’ and logos which means ‘study of’.As the time goes by there are now some changes had evolved.Like now a days psychology defined as the scientific study of mental processes and behavior considering physical state, mental state and environment.
We also  learned that the scientific psychology was  started in the year 1879 by Wilhelm Wundt in Germany.

He is considered as the ‘Father of Modern Psychology’
Wilhelm Wundt Is Best Known For:

”SCHOOL OF THOUGHTS”

Structuralism

  • Leading proponents: Wilhelm Wundt and Edward Titchener
  • Major goals:
    • Identify the elements of conscious experience
    • Determine how these elements combine to yield complex ideas in the mind

Functionalism

  • The acts and function of the mind.
  • Leading proponent: William James and John Dewey
  • Major goal: Determine the functions of mind

Gestalt Psychology

  • The whole is more important than the sum  of its part.
  • Leading proponent: Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang Kohler and Kurt Koffka
  • Major goal: Discover the innate organizing principles of mind
The term “gestalt” (a German word) refers to an overall pattern or configuration: the forest as opposed to the trees. The gestalt psychologists believed that was was important about mind was its ability to impose it’s own, built-in rules to interpret experience. This is a nativist position as these rules were assumed to be innate as opposed to being learned through experience. As these innate organizing principles were easiest to demonstrate in perception, the gestalt psychologists focused their initial efforts on discovering those rules that were applied to raw sensory input in order to form stable perceptions of the world.

Behaviorism

  • Focuses on measurable and observable behavior.
  • Leading proponent: John Watson
  • Major goal: Discover the laws relating stimulus and response.
Psychoanalysis
  • People are motivated by powerful unconscious drives and conflicts.
  • Leading proponent: Sigmund Freud
  • 3 unconscious motives[ID,EGO and SUPER EGO]
Now that we know  where does it proposed, when does it begin and who are the leading proponents let’s explore further about basic concepts that are relevant in our lives.
